Project Janus: A Blueprint for Modeling Human Complexity

Björn Kenneth Holmström November 2025 10 min read

We are racing to align Artificial Intelligence with human values, but we face a fatal problem: We have no coherent model of what a human being actually is.

Our current maps of human nature are fragmented:

  • AI Research models humans as utility maximizers (Reinforcement Learning).
  • Neuroscience maps the biological substrate but often misses the emergent mind.
  • Economics assumes rational actors disconnected from emotional regulation.
  • Spirituality addresses meaning but lacks computational rigor.

We have brilliant shards, but no mirror.

This fragmentation leads to catastrophic design failures. We build social media that hijacks our dopamine (Biological) while destroying our sense of shared truth (Social). We build AI that optimizes for engagement (Behavioral) while eroding our capacity for deep thought (Cognitive).

Project Janus is an attempt to repair this fragmentation. It is a complete theoretical and architectural framework for modeling human experience across all domains of existence.

The Six-Domain Architecture

To build technology that actually serves human flourishing—or governance that fits human reality—we must model the human as an integrated whole. Project Janus maps this across six interconnected domains:

  1. Biological: The physical substrate. Neuroscience, physiology, and the constraints of the body.
  2. Cognitive: The mental architecture. Reasoning, memory, attention, and belief systems.
  3. Emotional: Affective intelligence. How feelings provide information and regulate state.
  4. Behavioral: The action system. Habits, choices, and the gap between intention and action.
  5. Social: The relational fabric. Identity formation, cultural norms, and collective intelligence.
  6. Spiritual/Existential: The meaning dimension. Purpose, values, and self-transcendence.

The Innovation: Integration Bridges

The problem with most models isn’t the domains; it’s the silence between them. Project Janus introduces Integration Modules—computational bridges that model how these systems interact.

  • Bio-Cognitive Interfaces: Modeling how stress (Biological) degrades reasoning (Cognitive).
  • Values-Behavior Alignment: Tracking the friction between what we value (Existential) and what we do (Behavioral).
  • Meaning Crisis Response: Modeling how the system reorganizes when its narrative structure collapses.

This allows us to simulate Development, not just state. It models how a human being grows (or regresses) based on the interaction of these systems.

Why This Must Be Open Source

I have designed this architecture not as a proprietary product, but as a public good. I am releasing the complete blueprints under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) license.

This is a strategic choice. The “source code” of human modeling cannot be owned by a single corporation. If a tech giant uses these blueprints to build a superior model of human psychology, they must share their architectural improvements back to the commons. We cannot allow the map of our own minds to become a trade secret.

The Invitation to Build

I have laid the foundation: the theoretical framework, the domain specifications, and the integration logic. But I am the Architect, not the Captain.

Bringing Project Janus to life requires a consortium of researchers, AI engineers, and psychologists. It requires builders who understand that we cannot fix the world with the same fragmented consciousness that broke it.

We are at a unique inflection point where computational power and psychological insight can converge. Project Janus is the map for that convergence.

The blueprint is ready. The need is urgent. Let’s build technologies worthy of human beings.
