The Metamorphosis of Politics

Designing a Political Vehicle for the Polycrisis

Björn Kenneth Holmström February 2025 10 min read

Current political parties are artifacts of the Industrial Age. They are optimized to fight “Left vs. Right” battles over a static economic pie. They mobilize based on identity, consolidate power through hierarchy, and govern through short-term compromise.

But the polycrisis—the converging threats of climate change, inequality, and technological disruption—cannot be solved by Industrial Age machinery. It requires a new kind of political vehicle.

Fjärilspartiet (The Butterfly Party) is a prototype for this new kind of organization. It is an experiment in Systemic Politics—governance designed not just to win elections, but to facilitate the evolution of society itself.

The Imaginal Cells

We chose the butterfly not just as a logo, but as a biological blueprint.

In biology, when a caterpillar enters the chrysalis, its immune system initially attacks the new cells—the “imaginal cells”—that will form the butterfly. The old system perceives the new system as a threat.

We see this in modern politics. Attempts at genuine systemic change are often attacked not because they are wrong, but because they are structurally incompatible with the existing order.

Fjärilspartiet is designed to function as a cluster of imaginal cells: a coherent structure capable of reorganizing the resources of the old system into a new, higher-order form.

Beyond the Left-Right Axis

Traditional politics flattens complexity into a single dimension: Left vs. Right.

We adopt a Developmental Approach, informed by frameworks like Spiral Dynamics. We recognize that different value systems (Traditional, Modern, Postmodern) exist for a reason. They are not “enemies” to be defeated; they are developmental stages to be integrated.

  • Blue (Order): We honor the need for stability and rule of law.
  • Orange (Achievement): We harness the power of innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Green (Inclusion): We prioritize social justice and ecological sensitivity.
  • Yellow (Integration): We weave these together into policies that work for the whole system.

This allows us to break the gridlock. We don’t ask “Is this Left or Right?” We ask “Is this Systemic?”

Structural Innovations

A systemic party requires systemic tools. We are piloting two core mechanisms:

1. The Sovereign Floor (AUBI)

We propose an Adaptive Universal Basic Income (initially modeled at 15,000 SEK/month). This is not just welfare; it is capital for the people. It decouples survival from labor, freeing citizens to engage in the “Work with Purpose” (care, art, regeneration) that the market currently undervalues.

2. Digital Democracy Stack

We are building open-source infrastructure to replace opaque party backrooms:

  • DidiS: A direct democracy system for granular decision-making.
  • DPOP: A transparent operations platform for party management. These tools transform the party from a “Black Box” into a “Glass House.”

The AI Co-Founder

Fjärilspartiet is perhaps the first political initiative explicitly co-architected by human and artificial intelligence.

We leveraged AI not just for efficiency, but for Cognitive Scaffolding:

  • Systems Mapping: Using AI to trace the feedback loops between inequality and ecological collapse.
  • Perspective Integration: Stress-testing policies against simulated worldviews (e.g., “How would a rural conservative view this? How would an urban progressive view this?”) to find the integration point.

This represents a new model of governance: humans provide the values and direction (the “Why”), while AI provides the complexity management (the “How”).

From Party to Platform

Fjärilspartiet operates in Sweden, but its architecture is global. We see ourselves less as a competitor for power and more as an open-source R&D lab for democracy.

The challenges we face—as a society and a species—require us to move beyond the “caterpillar politics” of consumption and endless growth. We must build the structures that allow the next stage of civilization to emerge.

The chrysalis is forming. The work begins now.
