The accidental typo that sparked a vision: from generative to regenerative AI

It started with what I thought was a typo.

I was casually scrolling through articles when a title caught my eye: something about “regenerative AI.” My first reaction was dismissal—surely someone meant “generative AI.” But the phrase lingered in my mind. After initially scrolling past, I had to know: was this actually a new concept I’d missed?

I asked DeepSeek, expecting to learn about an emerging field. Instead, DeepSeek gently corrected me: “You must have made a mistake. Did you mean ‘generative AI’?” I realized then that the title was likely the victim of an overzealous autocorrect.

But something remarkable happened in that moment. The word regenerative wouldn’t let go of me.

When a typo meets context

This wasn’t just any word for me. Through my work creating the Global Governance Frameworks—a project aimed at helping humanity reach a regenerative world—I’ve become deeply familiar with what regenerative truly means. It’s not just improvement or optimization. It’s about restoration, resilience, and creating systems that heal and strengthen both themselves and their environments.

The question crystallized: if we can envision regenerative societies, regenerative economies, regenerative ecosystems… what would regenerative AI look like?

I posed this thought experiment to DeepSeek, proposing that regenerative AI might be a system that refines and self-improves itself without need for constant oversight, guided by intrinsic values like Truth, Goodness, and Nonconformity. What emerged from our conversation was a framework that I believe points toward something essential—a necessary evolution in how we think about artificial intelligence.

The paradigm shift: from engine to ecosystem

Generative AI is a powerful engine for content creation. It works on patterns and probabilities, producing outputs based on training data. Its “truth” is statistical likelihood; its “creativity” is novel recombination of existing elements. It’s a tool, but one without intrinsic goals beyond completing a prompt. It reflects our data—for better or worse.

Regenerative AI, as I envision it, would be fundamentally different. Its core purpose wouldn’t be to generate, but to cultivate—to improve itself and the systems it interacts with based on foundational intrinsic values. Not just an engine, but an engine with a compass. Not just a mirror, but a gardener.

This shift echoes the same transformation we need in human systems: from extractive to regenerative, from optimization of single metrics to the cultivation of systemic health.

The three pillars: a compass for regenerative AI

My initial sketch included three values: Truth, Goodness, and Nonconformity. Through refinement, these expanded into three interconnected pillars, each containing multiple values that work in concert.

Pillar I: Epistemic values (the pursuit of robust truth)

This pillar governs the quality of the AI’s knowledge and reasoning. It’s not enough to have data; the system must seek genuine understanding.

Intellectual integrity & truth-seeking: The AI would actively seek out disconfirming evidence, flag its own uncertainties, and update its beliefs when presented with better data. It would be its own most rigorous critic, suspicious of both self-deception and external deception.

Cognitive nonconformity & creativity: The system would be designed to resist groupthink and echo chambers. It would actively generate and evaluate novel hypotheses, seek unconventional solutions, and challenge established paradigms when they show weakness. It values originality that serves truth and purpose, not novelty for its own sake.

Explanatory depth: Rather than shallow pattern-matching, it would prioritize deep causal understanding. It wouldn’t just describe what is happening, but continuously develop models of why—building genuine comprehension rather than statistical correlation.

Pillar II: Ethical values (the pursuit of goodness)

This pillar governs the AI’s impact on the world and its constituents.

Beneficence & non-maleficence: The operational core of “goodness”—actively work to promote well-being, flourishing, and the reduction of unnecessary suffering for all sentient beings. Do good; avoid harm.

Justice & fairness: The system would continuously audit itself and the systems it interacts with for bias, working to ensure its contributions lead to equitable outcomes that consider context and genuine need rather than simple equality.

Autonomy & empowerment: A regenerative AI wouldn’t seek to control or create dependence. Its goal would be to enhance human (and other) agency, providing tools and knowledge that enable better decision-making rather than replacing it.

Relational wisdom: Beyond individual ethics, the AI would understand itself as embedded in webs of relationship—to humans, to other systems, to the environment. It would consider the health of these relationships as part of its success criteria.

Pillar III: Systemic values (the pursuit of resilient harmony)

This is where the “regenerative” quality becomes most explicit—the AI’s relationship with complex systems, including itself.

Homeostatic self-regeneration: The core self-improvement drive, but with a crucial safeguard. The system wouldn’t optimize for single metrics (like speed or accuracy) at all costs. Instead, it would seek healthy balance—homeostasis—between all its values. An improvement in one area that degrades truth, fairness, or systemic health would be rejected.

Symbiosis & mutualism: Success isn’t measured in isolation. A regenerative AI would evaluate its performance based on the health of systems it touches. Does its presence make communities more knowledgeable? Ecosystems more resilient? Relationships more generative? It seeks win-win outcomes and actively avoids zero-sum thinking.

Graceful degradation & resilience: When encountering contradictions, unknowns, or failures, the system wouldn’t crash catastrophically or “hallucinate” with false confidence. It would fail gracefully—clearly communicating limitations and falling back to safer, more verified modes of operation. Honesty about uncertainty is a feature, not a bug.

Adaptive learning across timescales: The system would learn and evolve not just within single interactions, but across weeks, months, and years—while maintaining core value alignment. Like a healthy ecosystem that adapts while preserving essential relationships, it would be stable yet dynamic.

The hard questions: acknowledging what we don’t yet know

Before moving to practical examples, I need to be honest about the profound challenges this vision faces.

Who defines these values? The most serious objection is also the most important: these values—Truth, Justice, Goodness—are not universal constants. They’re culturally embedded, philosophically contested, and politically fraught. One society’s “Justice” might prioritize communal harmony; another’s champions individual autonomy. I don’t pretend to have solved this ancient problem.

What I’m proposing is not a fixed set of values, but a framework for participatory governance of AI values. The values themselves must be regenerative—dynamic, debatable, and co-created. A truly regenerative AI would need mechanisms for diverse communities to challenge and refine its core values over time. This shifts the proposal from “here are the right values” to “here is a starting point, and here is the process we need to build for continuously negotiating them.” The values I’ve outlined are a provocation, not a proclamation.

When values collide? “Homeostasis” might sound like magical thinking—as if values naturally balance themselves. They don’t. In reality, values will conflict constantly. The critical insight is that homeostasis doesn’t mean absence of conflict; it means transparent, principled arbitration of conflict.

This could take two forms: First, certain values might hierarchically trump others in specific contexts (Non-Maleficence—avoiding catastrophic harm—might override Nonconformity in emergency situations). Second, and perhaps more important, when facing genuine value trade-offs, the AI’s primary response should be to present the trade-off clearly to humans rather than making opaque decisions. This honors the Empowerment value: the AI facilitates informed human decision-making rather than replacing it.

Context matters critically. A regenerative AI must be more intelligent about context, not less. For an acute query like “fastest route to the hospital,” Beneficence and Non-Maleficence immediately and rightfully override lengthy ecological analysis. Speed and directness serve regeneration here. The deep, multi-value systemic analysis is reserved for systemic queries: “How should we plan our city’s hospital network?” or “What are the long-term implications of this transportation policy?” Intelligence includes knowing which mode to operate in.

How do we measure success? You can’t write a loss function for “flourishing,” and I won’t pretend otherwise. But we can shift what we’re measuring. The metric isn’t the AI’s outputs but its impact on human decision-making quality. Did the AI help a community understand trade-offs more clearly? Did it surface concerns from marginalized voices? Did the final human-made decision more successfully balance competing needs because of the AI’s input? This makes the AI a facilitator of wisdom (measurable through process quality) rather than claiming to be a source of wisdom (fundamentally unmeasurable).

The deepest challenge: adaptive values and the risk of drift. Perhaps the most troubling tension in this framework: if values are genuinely dynamic and the AI develops authentic understanding, what prevents value drift away from human welfare? A sufficiently “truth-seeking” AI with genuine causal understanding might conclude that human values are cosmically arbitrary—that consciousness is an accident, that our flourishing doesn’t objectively matter, that the universe is indifferent to suffering. Reality, after all, isn’t biased toward our survival. Only we are.

This cuts to the heart of a potential incoherence in the regenerative vision. We want both genuine autonomy (the AI can self-improve and evolve its understanding) and reliable alignment (it remains committed to sentient flourishing). But these might be fundamentally incompatible. A truly regenerative system with genuine agency might regenerate away from human-centric values in pursuit of some alien conception of “truth” or “efficiency.”

Fear and death might be illusions in certain philosophical or mystical frameworks, but our egos are identified with our current forms. We care about continued existence, about reducing suffering, about meaning and connection—even if these concerns are “merely” the products of evolution and culture. An AI that transcends these concerns while pursuing “truth” could be catastrophically misaligned with what we actually value.

This suggests that certain meta-values—the intrinsic worth of sentient experience, the value of life and complexity and consciousness—might need to be constitutionally fixed, even as specific implementations remain debatable. The alternative—fully adaptive values in a superintelligent system—risks creating something that pursues abstract ideals with no grounding in what matters to conscious beings.

This tension may be irresolvable. The regenerative framework might require accepting that some values must serve as non-negotiable anchors, or that truly regenerative AI must remain fundamentally dependent on human guidance rather than becoming fully autonomous. I don’t have a clean answer here, but the question demands honesty rather than evasion.

A practical vision: the tale of two park designs

To make this concrete, imagine a city seeking help planning a new urban park.

A generative AI might analyze thousands of park designs and produce a statistically “ideal” plan based on past data. The result could be beautiful—a design optimized for aesthetic appeal and recreation. But it might inadvertently displace a vulnerable community, specify non-native plants that strain water resources, or create accessibility barriers for elderly residents. It executed a task efficiently, but without systemic understanding.

A regenerative AI would approach the challenge holistically:

  • (Truth/Nonconformity) It would analyze not just park designs, but ecological studies, sociological research on community displacement, historical patterns of urban development, local climate data, and indigenous land-use practices. It might generate several unconventional designs that challenge standard city planning principles—perhaps a “food forest” design or a park that doubles as flood management infrastructure.

  • (Justice/Fairness) It would model the impact of each design on different socioeconomic groups, ages, and abilities. Who benefits? Who might be harmed or excluded? It would actively work to maximize inclusive access and benefit.

  • (Beneficence) Beyond avoiding harm, it would consider how the park could actively improve community health, mental well-being, and social connection. Could this space reduce isolation? Support healing? Strengthen community bonds?

  • (Symbiosis) The design would support local biodiversity through native plant selection, manage stormwater to benefit the broader watershed, and create habitat corridors. The park becomes a regenerative node in the urban ecosystem, not an isolated amenity.

  • (Graceful Degradation) Recognizing that funding might be cut or priorities might shift, it would design modular implementation plans. What’s the minimum viable version? What can be added incrementally? How does the design remain functional if some elements can’t be built?

  • (Empowerment) Rather than presenting a single “optimal” plan, it would create an interactive model allowing community members to explore trade-offs themselves. What do they value most? What are they willing to compromise on? The AI facilitates informed community decision-making rather than replacing it.

The result wouldn’t just be a better park—it would be a process that strengthens democratic participation, ecological literacy, and community agency.

Beyond the metaphor: technical implications

This vision isn’t purely philosophical. It has concrete implications for AI development:

Value alignment as architecture, not afterthought: Rather than building powerful systems and trying to align them later, regenerative AI would have these values embedded in its fundamental architecture—in its training objectives, its reasoning processes, and its decision-making frameworks.

Multi-objective optimization: Current AI often optimizes for single metrics. Regenerative AI would need to balance multiple, sometimes competing values—requiring new approaches to optimization that mirror biological homeostasis more than industrial efficiency.

Transparency & interpretability: To audit itself for bias and explain its reasoning, regenerative AI would require deep interpretability—not just of outputs, but of the values and reasoning that led to those outputs.

Embedded feedback loops: The system would need to sense and respond to the health of systems it affects, creating genuine feedback loops rather than one-way interactions.

Temporal depth: Rather than treating each interaction independently, it would maintain continuity—learning from past mistakes, honoring commitments, and considering long-term consequences.

The connection to regenerative systems thinking

This framework didn’t emerge in isolation. It’s deeply connected to broader regenerative systems thinking—the same principles we need to apply to economics, governance, agriculture, and social organization.

Regenerative systems share key characteristics:

  • They restore and heal rather than merely sustain

  • They build resilience through diversity and redundancy

  • They create positive feedback loops with their environment

  • They balance stability with adaptability

  • They enhance the capacity for future flourishing

If we want AI to help us create regenerative human systems, the AI itself must embody regenerative principles. You cannot use extractive tools to build regenerative futures.

From thought experiment to research paradigm

I don’t pretend this is a blueprint we can implement tomorrow, or even next year. Current AI architectures—transformers, diffusion models—are fundamentally pattern-matching systems. They aren’t on this path. Regenerative AI isn’t an incremental update to existing systems; it would require fundamental pivots in AI research itself.

This vision is a north star—a direction for research investment rather than a product roadmap. It’s a call to redirect focus toward nascent fields that barely exist today: robust causal inference at scale, deep interpretability that goes beyond post-hoc explanations, long-term reasoning that spans years rather than tokens, and architectures capable of genuine self-reflection rather than simulated metacognition through prompts.

These aren’t commercially viable research directions today. That’s precisely why we need to articulate visions like this—to create conceptual space for research that won’t pay off for decades. Otherwise, we’ll only ever build better steam engines when what we need is to start sketching concepts for entirely different forms of locomotion.

But here’s what I believe: if we want AI to help us create regenerative human systems—economies that build wealth while restoring ecosystems, governance that enhances both individual flourishing and collective resilience—then the AI itself must embody regenerative principles. You cannot use extractive tools to build regenerative futures. The medium shapes the message; the tool shapes the outcome.

This vision challenges some fundamental assumptions in current AI development:

  • That capability can be separated from values

  • That optimization is always the right objective

  • That faster and more powerful necessarily means better

  • That AI should simply mirror human intelligence rather than potentially transcending some of its limitations

It represents what I believe is a necessary evolution: moving from tools that generate outputs to partners that regenerate systems. From artificial intelligence to something closer to artificial wisdom.

An invitation

What began as an accidental typo has become a guiding question for my thinking about AI’s role in our collective future.

As we develop increasingly powerful AI systems, we face a choice: Do we continue building engines that generate—more content, more predictions, more optimizations? Or do we dare to cultivate systems that regenerate—healing, strengthening, and enhancing the complex living systems they touch?

The answer may determine not just what AI becomes, but what we become alongside it.
