Introducing Fjärilspartiet: A Systemic Approach to Political Transformation
Published: February 25, 2025
Today, I’m excited to announce the formation of Fjärilspartiet—the Butterfly Party—a new political initiative in Sweden designed to facilitate our society’s transformation toward greater sustainability, meaning, and flourishing for all.
Why a Butterfly?
The butterfly serves as our central metaphor because it embodies the process of metamorphosis—a complete transformation that occurs through distinct developmental stages. Just as a caterpillar must undergo a profound reorganization within the chrysalis before emerging as a butterfly, we believe our political and social systems require fundamental restructuring rather than incremental adjustments.
We are currently in the “egg stage” of our development, carefully designing the foundational structures and approaches that will enable our full emergence.
Beyond Left and Right: A Developmental Approach
Fjärilspartiet transcends the traditional left-right political spectrum by adopting a developmental perspective. Rather than positioning ourselves somewhere along this one-dimensional axis, we recognize that different worldviews and value systems each have their own validity and contribution to make.
Spiral Dynamics: Understanding Our Evolution
A key framework informing our approach is Spiral Dynamics, which maps the evolution of human consciousness and values systems through distinct stages. This model helps us understand why traditional political approaches are struggling to address our complex challenges—they often operate from a single level of development rather than integrating multiple perspectives.
Spiral Dynamics reveals how societies naturally evolve through different worldviews, each with their own strengths and limitations. Our current global challenges require thinking that can integrate multiple perspectives while facilitating healthy development at both individual and collective levels.
If you’re interested in understanding where you are in this developmental journey, I’ve created Spiralize.org—a free assessment tool that helps you identify your values profile and understand developmental patterns. This tool can provide personal insights while illustrating the framework that informs Fjärilspartiet’s approach.
The application of Spiral Dynamics to political systems design allows us to:
Create policies that speak to people at different developmental stages
Design governance systems that facilitate healthy individual and societal evolution
Bridge seemingly irreconcilable worldviews by finding higher-order integrations
Avoid the trap of imposing one-size-fits-all solutions on diverse populations
We’ve drawn inspiration from this and other integral frameworks to create a political approach capable of addressing the full spectrum of human needs and aspirations.
Our Core Innovations
AUBI: Adaptive Universal Basic Income
At the heart of our economic vision is AUBI—an Adaptive Universal Basic Income that provides everyone with a foundation of 15,000 SEK monthly, supplemented by need-based and contribution-based additions. This system is designed to:
Provide genuine economic freedom to pursue meaningful work
Eliminate bureaucracy associated with existing welfare systems
Recognize and support various forms of contribution to society beyond traditional employment
Create a dynamic, circular flow of resources that strengthens local economies
Digital Democracy Tools
We’re developing open-source platforms for democratic participation:
DidiS: A direct democracy system enabling citizen participation in decision-making
DPOP: A party operations platform ensuring transparency and facilitating member engagement
These tools embody our commitment to practical implementation of our values—they’re not just ideas but functioning systems anyone can examine, use, and improve.
The Process Behind Our Creation
The journey to create Fjärilspartiet began with recognizing that our current political systems are inadequate for addressing the complex, interconnected challenges we face. Here’s a glimpse into our process:
Systems mapping: We started by mapping the interconnections between various societal challenges—ecological, social, economic, and technological—to understand leverage points for intervention.
Developmental analysis: We examined how different worldviews perceive these challenges and what solutions would resonate with each perspective.
Structural design: Rather than beginning with position statements, we developed adaptive governance mechanisms capable of integrating multiple perspectives and evolving over time.
Pilot projects: We’re designing small-scale implementations of our core ideas to test, validate, and refine before broader application.
Open collaboration: Throughout this process, we’ve embraced an open, collaborative approach, inviting diverse perspectives to strengthen our thinking.
This process itself embodies our values—thoughtful, systemic, evidence-based, and inclusive.
Leveraging AI as a Collaborative Partner
Throughout Fjärilspartiet’s development, we’ve embraced AI tools as collaborative partners in our creative and organizational processes. This approach has yielded significant benefits:
Web Development and Technical Infrastructure
Rapid prototyping of our website and digital platforms with AI assistance
Generating and refining code for our democratic tools
Troubleshooting technical issues and optimizing performance
Creating accessible interfaces that work across devices
Content and Policy Development
Refining complex policy ideas into clear, accessible language
Generating initial drafts of documentation that we then adapt and personalize
Analyzing existing policy frameworks to identify gaps and opportunities
Translating content to reach broader audiences
Idea Refinement and Systems Thinking
Testing ideas against different worldviews and finding integrative approaches
Mapping complex systems and identifying leverage points
Generating alternative scenarios to stress-test proposed solutions
Providing research summaries to inform our thinking
Visual Design and Communication
Creating visual assets for our communications
Generating diagrams to illustrate complex systemic relationships
Assisting with presentation materials for events and meetings
Helping design intuitive user interfaces for our platforms
This AI-human collaboration represents a new approach to political organization—one where technology amplifies human creativity rather than replacing it. We see this as a model for how governance itself might evolve: humans setting values and direction while leveraging technology to handle complexity and implementation details.
By openly sharing our experience working with AI tools, we hope to demystify these technologies and demonstrate their potential for positive societal transformation when guided by human wisdom and values.
An Invitation to Co-Creation
Fjärilspartiet isn’t meant to be just another political party competing for power. Instead, we see ourselves as catalysts for a broader transformation—creating systems, tools, and spaces that enable a more conscious approach to governance and social organization.
We invite you to join us in this process, whether you’re in Sweden or elsewhere:
Explore our open-source democracy tools
Adapt our approaches to your local context
Contribute to the ongoing development of our frameworks
Connect with others interested in systemic political transformation
The challenges we face as a society—and as a species—require new ways of thinking and organizing. Fjärilspartiet represents one experiment in that direction, and we hope it inspires many more.
Together, we can create political systems worthy of our highest potential.
